Sweet Salsa Seven - Etiquette

A happy couple enjoying a friendly social salsa dance

Do you know how to behave on a salsa social dancefloor? Don't make rookie mistakes and follow our seven rules for social dancing.

1. Ask Politely and Respect the Answer

  • When inviting someone to dance, make eye contact, smile, and ask respectfully.
  • If someone declines, accept it graciously—don’t pressure or take it personally.

2. Maintain Proper Hygiene

  • Come clean, fresh, and avoid overpowering cologne or perfume.
  • Breath mints or chewing gum are a plus—close proximity means breath matters.

3. Adapt to Your Partner’s Level

  • Match your moves to your partner’s comfort and skill level.
  • Don’t show off or over-lead, especially if your partner is still learning.

4. Lead and Follow with Clarity and Gentleness

  • Leads should guide, not force. Followers should remain responsive and relaxed.
  • Use clear signals and respect physical boundaries—no rough or invasive moves.

5. Respect the Rueda Rules (if dancing in a group circle)

  • If you join a *rueda de casino*, know the basic calls and etiquette.
  • Listen to the caller (*cantante*) and keep formation tight and fluid.

6. Thank Your Partner After the Dance

  • A simple “thank you” or smile at the end of the song shows appreciation.
  • Avoid abruptly walking away unless necessary or agreed upon.

7. Be Mindful of the Space and Others

  • Dance with spatial awareness to avoid bumping into others.
  • In crowded spaces, keep your movements compact and controlled.

It's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.
